Due to its status as a federally regulated health insurance program, there are specific times of year during which you are permitted to enroll in Medicare for the first time, or make changes to your existing coverage.

First up is the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which occurs during the three months prior to your 65th birthday, the entire month of your 65th birthday, and the three months following your 65th birthday. This is the time when you will become eligible for Medicare coverage for the first time. You can also enter the IEP upon the diagnosis of certain disabilities or diseases.

Next comes the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which runs from January 1st to March 31st at the start of each year. This is typically the best time to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan if you already have Original Medicare coverage.

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), takes place toward the end of each calendar year, running from October 15th to December 7th. During this period, you can also enroll in Medicare for the first time or make changes to an existing plan.

Finally, there is what’s known as a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). These enrollment periods will allow you to enroll in new coverage immediately, and usually occur after certain events, such as a recent move to a new area or in the event that a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area.
