Learn MoreI Heard That I Could Enroll in Medicare at Any Time - Is This True?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. The enrollment process for Medicare isn’t open all year round. In order to enroll, you’ll need to wait for specific enrollment periods to open up.
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is your first chance to enroll in a Medicare plan. The IEP begins around the time you’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare, whether as a result of reaching the necessary age of 65 or needing to apply as a result of qualifying illness or disability. During your IEP, you’ll have a window of seven months to apply for benefits. If you’re turning 65, it begins three months before your birthday, lasts through your birthday month, and ends three months after you turn 65.
For those of you who miss your IEP, Medicare opens an Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) at the same time each year. During AEP, you’ll have the chance to enroll in a new plan. AEP begins each year on October 15, and ends on December 7.
During the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), those of you who are current beneficiaries receive an opportunity to make any changes you want to your plans. Like AEP, OEP takes place at the same time each year, from January 1 through March 31.
If you miss enrolling in a Medicare plan during any of the above time periods, fear not. Being unable to enroll in a Medicare plan as a result of a qualifying life event, such as relocation or illness, may qualify you to take part in a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). SEPs also open up if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area.
