The Surprising Benefits of Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies. This means that, while they offer all of the standard Medicare benefits, any additional benefits are left to the discretion of the insurance provider. Since no two plans are exactly alike, we cannot guarantee every plan will offer ever benefit. However, below are some benefits commonly offered by plans in the League City, TX area.

  • Vision care.
  • Dental care.
  • Hearing care.
  • Transportation to and from appointments.
  • Access to fitness centers across the country through SilverSneakers.
  • Assistance paying for groceries and OTC medications.

In addition, you can get coverage for prescription drugs through Medicare Part D, or you can opt for Medigap Insurance for lower deductibles and extra hospital stays without the extra benefits. Our licensed insurance experts can help you navigate your options!

Check Your Medicare Eligibility

Ready to enroll? Before you commit, you need to confirm you’re in one of the official Medicare enrollment periods. Here’s a brief breakdown.

  1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the first opportunity you have to enroll in Medicare. It usually begins three months before your 65th birthday and lasts for a total of seven months. During this period, you can sign up for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) if you’re eligible. If you miss your IEP, you may have to wait for the next enrollment period and may face penalties.
  2. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): This enrollment period occurs every year from October 15 to December 7. It allows individuals who already have Medicare to make changes to their coverage. During the AEP, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, or vice versa. You can also join, drop, or change your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. The changes you make during this period typically take effect on January 1 of the following year.
  3. Open Enrollment Period (OEP): The Open Enrollment Period is specifically for individuals who already have a Medicare Advantage Plan. It runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. During this period, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan. You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan, or you can return to Original Medicare and join a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if you wish.
  4. Special Enrollment Period (SEP): The Special Enrollment Period is for those who experience certain qualifying life events. It allows you to make changes to your Medicare coverage outside the regular enrollment periods. Qualifying events may include moving to a new location, losing employer-based coverage, or becoming eligible for Medicaid. The specific rules and duration of the SEP vary depending on the circumstances.

Additionally, there is a Special Enrollment Period connected to 5-Star rated Medicare Advantage Plans. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan that is rated 5 out of 5 stars by the government, you can switch to another 5-star rated Medicare Advantage Plan once a year.

This special enrollment period is known as the 5-Star Special Enrollment Period. It typically runs from December 8 to November 30 of the following year. It allows you to switch to a highly rated plan that offers better quality and more benefits.
