Depending on whether or not you’re enrolling in Medicare for the first time, there may be some limitations to your eligibility.
There is a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible for Medicare. If you are turning 65, this period is centered around your birthday month, including the three months before and afterward. Your enrollment period may vary if you become eligible for another reason.
If you miss your IEP, or are already enrolled in Original Medicare, you may choose to enroll in Medicare Advantage during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15th to November 7th. If you’re already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, you can change your plan during the Open Enrollment Period from January 1st to March 31st.
Under special circumstances, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You typically become eligible for an SEP if you have recently moved, lost insurance coverage, or if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan has recently become available in the Portland, ME area.
