When can I enroll in Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage is a U.S. government-regulated health insurance program. As such, there are strict rules you must follow regarding when you can enroll in – or make changes to – a Medicare Advantage plan.

Beneficiaries typically become eligible to enroll in Medicare for the first time upon reaching the age of 65, or upon the diagnosis of certain disabilities or diseases. This period is known as the Initial Enrollment Period and takes place three months prior to your 65th birthday, during your actual birth month, and three months after your 65th birthday.

Medicare coverage can be expanded to a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, which takes place between October 15 and December 7 at the end of each year.

If you already have Medicare Advantage but are interested in checking out even more comprehensive options, the best time to do this is during the Open Enrollment Period, which occurs between January 1 and March 31 at the start of each year.

It is also possible to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period in certain circumstances, such as a recent move to a new location or in the event that a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in the San Diego area.
