Can I Enroll in a Medicare Plan Any Time I Choose?

Medicare enrollment, like enrollment in any other type of health insurance plan, is not a rolling year-round process. In order to enroll in a Medicare plan, you must wait for one of three enrollment periods to roll around.

The first of these enrollment periods is known as your Initial Enrollment Period, or IEP. If you qualify for your IEP as a result of turning 65, your period will begin three months before the month of your birthday and end three months after. In total, your IEP gives you seven months to enroll before, during, and after your 65th birthday. If you qualify for Medicare because of a disability or illness, your IEP will depend on the onset of the qualifying illness or disability.

The second enrollment period is Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, or AEP. You can take advantage of this enrollment period if you missed your IEP. AEP takes place during the same time period each year, from October 15 through December 7.

Already enrolled in Medicare, but looking to make changes to your plan? The Open Enrollment Period, or OEP, is your chance to do just that. Like AEP, OEP takes place during a specific time period each year, from January 1 through March 31.

Did you lose coverage, or have a qualifying life event, such as relocation, keep you from enrolling in a Medicare plan during any of the above time periods? You may qualify for what is known as a Special Enrollment Period, or SEP, that allows you to enroll in a Medicare plan outside of the above enrollment periods.

You may also qualify for an SEP if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan suddenly becomes available in your area.
