In today’s world, a lot of things make the future feel like a very uncertain thing. If you watch the news on a regular basis, all you see is doom and gloom. Some of that doom and gloom is often related to the state of senior healthcare and where it’s heading.
If you’re suffering from certain mental health conditions, this can be downright terrifying for you. Not feeling like you’re able to get the help you need when you need it can overwhelm you. Being overwhelmed can put you in a dangerous position.
Those of you on Medicare plans know coverage for mental health care is provided. Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D, and Medigap plans offer comprehensive coverage for senior health care, especially when combined. However, for all of the coverage available, the United Health Foundation has found an alarming trend when it comes to senior health care.
The organization’s annual report, known as the America’s Health Rankings 2023 Senior Report, has found great disparities in the health of senior citizens overall. What do the findings of the United Health Foundation mean for you, and for the state of senior health in general? How can the state of senior health be fixed?
We’ll answer the above questions and more in our latest look at current Medicare news.
Each year, the United Health Foundation (UHF) releases a Senior Report. This report is meant to give you a look into senior health and well-being across the United States. Some of the discoveries made by the UHF are sounding alarms regarding the disparities in the quality of senior health, as well as the quality of healthcare available to all seniors.
One finding relates to a disturbing upward trend in drug use in seniors. For over a decade, deaths related to drug use in seniors has risen steadily. The number of deaths related to senior drug use has increased by 43% across the nation in the last few years.
The United Health Foundation also found that nearly 6 million senior citizens currently live in poverty. If you’re one of these seniors, this could potentially decrease your ability to afford the care you need.
While the United Health Foundation found plenty that could be improved on, their report isn’t all doom and gloom. One positive note is the continued improvement in access to care for senior citizens. This has been attributed to the rise in the number of senior health care providers and home health care workers across the United States.
A key segment of the America’s Health Rankings 2023 Senior Report may help you determine where to relocate after retirement. The United Health Foundation highlighted 5 states as the healthiest for older adults. The 5 healthiest states for seniors, according to the UHF, are:
5 states were listed as having the most opportunity to improve, meaning the quality of senior health care could be better in these areas. The UHF listed the following 5 states as having the most opportunity to improve:
While you may note areas of promise in the findings of the United Health Foundation, the key takeaway is that there’s an urgent need to help you find better health care as a senior citizen. Getting timely, quality senior health care is important to your ability to lead a happy, healthy life.
For instance, you may shy away from getting a health insurance policy because you’re afraid of the cost. This is especially common if you’re a senior living on a low fixed income. You should know that there are plenty of options available to help you afford the care you need.
Both Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) and Medicare Advantage plans offer comprehensive senior health care coverage. Medicare Advantage plans offer the same coverage as Original Medicare, but can often offer more depending on your area and health insurance carrier.
When you combine any Medicare plan with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug coverage and Medigap supplemental insurance, your out-of-pocket costs dwindle. Knowing that you can afford the cost of needed senior health care may be just what you need to help you reconnect with a provider to take better care of yourself.
