One first becomes eligible to enroll in Medicare during what is known as the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which takes place in the three months prior to one’s 65th birthday, the entire month of their 65th birthday, and the three months following their 65th birthday. One may also become eligible for IEP upon the diagnosis of certain disabilities or diseases.
Outside of IEP, there is a timeframe known as the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which is usually the best time to enroll in Medicare coverage outside of one’s IEP. The OEP occurs each year between January 1st and March 31st.
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), is usually the best time to make desired changes to existing Medicare plans. The AEP occurs at the end of each year beginning on October 15th and concluding on December 7th.
Outside of the aforementioned enrollment periods, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which allows you to enroll in or make changes to Medicare coverage as a result of specific circumstances, such as a recent move to a new area or in the event that a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area.
Due to its status as a government-managed health insurance program, there are strict regulations in place that determine when one is eligible to enroll in Medicare coverage for the first time, or make necessary changes to their existing coverage.
