Are you finding that Original Medicare isn’t covering all of your healthcare needs? There are many different ways you can get the coverage you need, often for less than the cost of the monthly premium for Medicare Part B. Many American seniors who need coverage more comprehensive than what’s offered by Original Medicare often turn to Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, essentially offers the same benefits offered by Original Medicare, Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. How Do I Know If I'm Eligible to Enroll?

The best way to know if you’re eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan is to first figure out if you’re eligible to enroll in Original Medicare. You’re eligible to enroll in Original Medicare if:

  • You’re about to turn 65.
  • You’re under 65 and you have a qualifying disability, such as End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Most individuals enroll in Medicare upon turning 65. There are also numerous opportunities throughout the year to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, switch Medicare Advantage plans, or obtain Medicare Part D. These are known as enrollment periods.

The period during which you can enroll in Medicare when you first become eligible is known as your Initial Enrollment Period, or IEP. This period lasts for seven months, starting three months before you turn 65 and ending three months after. You become eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during this time.

You can also enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, or AEP. The AEP takes place from October 15 through December 7 each year. If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can change or update your coverage during the Open Enrollment Period, or OEP, which takes place from January 1 through March 31 each year. If certain life circumstances apply, you may be able to enroll during a Special Enrollment Period, or SEP, outside of the timeframes listed above.

One of the circumstances during which you can utilize an SEP to change your Medicare Advantage coverage is if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area. These plans offer the best possible Medicare Advantage coverage available.

If you’d like to learn more about 5-Star Medicare Advantage plans, or simply learn whether or not one is available in the Dallas, TX area, don’t hesitate to call us today.
