Original Medicare covers many health services, but you may be surprised to discover that Part A and Part B do not usually provide coverage for routine vision, hearing, and dental care. For example, if you’re in need of a new hearing aid, a new pair of glasses, or new dental appliances and your primary form of insurance is Original Medicare, you’ll likely pay out of pocket for these items.
Those who need coverage for vision, hearing, and dental care often choose to enroll in Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers and often include benefits that are not included in Original Medicare. There are several Medicare Advantage plans currently available in Houston.

Learn MoreAre you eligible to receive Medicare benefits? If so, there are several times each year or certain circumstances that will allow you to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
You become eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan when you first turn 65 or otherwise qualify for Medicare. Your first opportunity to enroll comes during your Initial Enrollment Period, which lasts for seven months – three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your 65th birthday, and three months after your 65th birthday.
If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period, you have three other opportunities to enroll in a Medicare plan:
- General Medicare Enrollment Period – occurs January 1 – March 31 each year.
- Annual Enrollment Period – occurs October 15 – December 7 each year
- Open Enrollment Period – occurs January 1 – March 31 each year
Sometimes, life gets in the way and you may miss a certain enrollment period. Not to worry. If you miss an enrollment period due to qualifying life events, such as relocating to another state or if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area, you may qualify for what is known as a Special Enrollment Period.
Because Medicare is a government-managed health insurance program, strict regulations are in place to determine when one becomes eligible to enroll in Medicare coverage for the first time, or to make changes to existing coverage.
