Seniors from all across the United States are flocking to Maricopa, Arizona for a number of reasons. The weather is beautiful nearly year-round, there’s plenty to see, and it’s close to some of the biggest, most beautiful cities in the country. It’s also home to some great comprehensive Medicare plans.
If you’re currently enrolled in Original Medicare, Medicare parts A and B, you know how comprehensive that insurance can be. It provides coverage for a wide variety of hospital and medical services and treatments that seniors need. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t cover everything. There are, however, other ways that you can bolster your coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are private health insurance plans that offer the same coverage as Original Medicare, but they can also offer more. For instance, Medicare Advantage plans usually offer vision, dental, and health care coverage. This is important, as vision, dental, and health care services are among the most-needed by seniors at times.
You may want to keep your Original Medicare coverage, but have supplemental insurance to help pay for what Medicare Part A or Medicare Part B does not. If this is the case, there are options that can help! Medicare Part D, also known as Medicare Prescription Drug coverage, can help you pay for needed medications. Medicare supplemental insurance, also known as Medigap, can help you “fill in the gaps” of your Original Medicare insurance by covering certain things, such as copays or coinsurance, that Original Medicare doesn’t.

You may be wondering how Medicare Advantage plans can offer coverage that’s often a little different from Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans are essentially private health insurance plans. They’re offered not by the federal government, but by private insurance companies who are authorized by the federal government to offer them. Because these plans are offered by private companies, they can provide coverage and benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t.
This doesn’t mean that all Medicare Advantage plans are the same. Benefits offered by plans can vary depending on a number of factors, including where you live and who’s offering your health insurance plan.
Medicare Advantage plans commonly offer coverage for the following treatments and services:

Unfortunately, you can’t just sign up for a Medicare plan any time you like. There are three primary enrollment periods during which you can enroll in a Medicare plan.
Just as you’re turning 65, you become eligible for Medicare benefits. This triggers an Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) which begins three months before you turn 65, runs through your 65th birthday, and ends three months after you turn 65. In total, you have seven months to enroll in a Medicare plan in your area.
If you miss enrolling in Medicare during your IEP, you’ll get a fresh chance to do so beginning in October. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) gives current beneficiaries a chance to drop or add coverage. It also allows those who want to enroll in a plan the opportunity to do just that. AEP runs from October 15 through December 7 each year.
For those who are already enrolled in a Medicare plan and wish to make changes, you can do so during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP). OEP runs yearly from January 1 to March 31.
Seniors eligible to enroll in Medicare, but were unable to do so during one of the three main periods because of a qualifying life event, may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). For instance, if you just relocated to Maricopa, you may qualify for an SEP if you’re looking to enroll in a Medicare plan. If a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan were to become available in the Maricopa, AZ area, this could open an SEP as well.
