Sierra Vista may be a hotspot for birdwatchers, but even the fanciest binoculars won’t help you find a good Medicare plan. Is that zero premium plan really your best option?

Medicare Advantage is a type of government-subsidized private insurance. This means that every Medicare Advantage plan will offer the same core benefits as Original Medicare, like doctor visits and hospital coverage. However, this also means that private insurers are free to offer additional benefits to incentivize enrollment; benefits Original Medicare doesn’t offer. Because these additional benefits aren’t standardized, they can vary depending on your plan and geographic area.

Learn MoreBefore committing to a Medicare plan, it’s important to understand the laws and regulations surrounding enrollment. Much like the health insurance marketplace, there are specific times of the year in which you may enroll in or change your Medicare coverage.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): The IEP is the first time you can enroll in Medicare, which is the seven-month period that starts three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after it.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): The AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this period, you can enroll in a new Medicare plan, or change your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plan. However, you may need to pay a penalty if you did not enroll during your IEP.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP): The OEP runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. During this time, you may change your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D coverage, either by enrolling in a different plan or returning to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you experience a qualifying life event, such as moving or losing employer-sponsored health coverage, you may be eligible for a SEP. This allows you to enroll in Medicare outside of the regular enrollment periods. You may also qualify for a SEP if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area.
