All ready to enroll? Before you make a commitment, keep in mind that you can only enroll in or change your Medicare coverage during federally mandated enrollment periods.
Most seniors will want to sign up during the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after that. If you qualify for Medicare for a different reason, this period will vary.
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is from October 15 to December 7 each year. If you missed your IEP, or simply want to make adjustments to your coverage, you can enroll in a new plan during the AEP.
The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is from January 1 to March 31 each year. It allows you to change your coverage if you are already enrolled in Medicare, but will not let you enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan if you’re not already enrolled.
Under certain circumstances, such as moving or loss of coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You might also qualify for a SEP if a 5-Star Medicare Advantage plan becomes available in your area.
