Medicare: Eligibility
Who is Eligible for Medicare?
Medicare is primarily available to people aged 65 or older, but individuals with certain serious medical conditions may also be eligible. Medicare is only available to U.S. citizens or legal residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five continuous years. [HA1]

Eligibility During Open Enrollment
During Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, anyone who is already enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B is eligible to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.
Learn More About EnrollmentEligibility Outside of Open Enrollment
Outside of the Medicare Open Enrollment period, you may still be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). SEPs can be triggered by certain life events, such as moving to a new area, losing other health coverage, or becoming eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Individuals newly eligible for Medicare or have been newly diagnosed with a condition that qualifies for certain plans may also enroll outside the standard window.
