Medicare: Enrollment
How Do I Sign Up For Medicare?
Medicare enrollment depends on your situation. If you’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled at 65 and get your Medicare card about three months before your birthday. If not, you’ll need to enroll yourself during certain times of the year or after specific life events.

Enrollment Periods
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
This seven-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and lasts three months after. Missing this window may lead to late enrollment penalties.
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 each year and is the main time to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, which may offer more coverage than Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
These enrollment windows can occur year-round due to life events like moving or losing coverage. Turning 65 also qualifies but is called the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).
